Questions answered

The ones we hear every week.

If your question is not here, ring us. We would rather talk it through than have you guess.

Before the car leaves

Which Gulf countries do you collect from?

All six: the United Arab Emirates (Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah and the northern emirates), Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman.

Can you ship a car that still has finance on it?

Not until the finance is settled. Gulf authorities will not deregister a car while a bank still has an interest in it, so ask your bank for a clearance letter as early as you can.

Do I have to be in the Gulf when the car is collected?

No. Plenty of people have flown home by then. Sort the paperwork and fines before you go, and leave the keys and the authority to hand the car over with someone you trust.

What documents do you need from me?

Copies of the registration card, your passport and proof that the car is yours. If you are moving home and have applied for Transfer of Residence, the reference number too.

Can I buy a car in Dubai and have it shipped straight to the UK?

Yes, and many people do. Talk to us before you pay, so we can tell you what bringing that particular car home involves. Run a history check on the VIN too, because My Car Import does not take on salvage cars bought in Dubai.

Cost and tax

What import tax will I pay?

Usually 10% import duty and 20% import VAT. Both are worked out on the price of the car plus the cost of shipping it, and the VAT is also charged on the duty.

Can I import my car tax-free?

If you are moving your home to the UK, have lived abroad for more than 12 months and have owned the car for at least 6 months, Transfer of Residence relief can remove the duty and VAT. You cannot sell the car for the first 12 months.

The car was mine in the UK before I moved. Do I pay again?

Possibly not. A car exported from the UK and brought back within 3 years, unaltered, may qualify for Returned Goods Relief, and Transfer of Residence may apply if you are moving home. HMRC decides, and we will check it for you.

Is there a cheaper rate for classic cars?

Yes. Cars over 30 years old in their original state pay no duty and 5% import VAT.

Do you publish prices?

No, because every car is different. The quote sets out each part of the cost for your car, so you can see exactly what you are paying for.

Shipping

How long is the car at sea?

Usually 3 to 6 weeks in a container. RoRo can be quicker from some ports.

Which port does my car leave from?

UAE cars ship from Jebel Ali. Elsewhere in the Gulf, we confirm the loading port in your quote.

Shared container or a container of its own?

Shared is the usual choice and the best value. For valuable, rare or delicate cars we recommend a container of its own.

Is the car insured on the way?

Transit insurance is available for its full value, and we recommend it for every car.

In the UK

Is a left-hand drive car legal in the UK?

Yes. It needs its headlights adjusted, a speedometer that reads in miles per hour and a rear fog light, and we do all of that in-house.

Does my car need an IVA test?

If it is under ten years old, usually yes. Cars between 10 and 40 years old take an MOT, and cars over 40 need no test before registration.

How long does registration take?

Once the car has passed its test, usually around 10 working days through our dealer-level DVLA account.

Can you store the car until I am ready?

Yes. We have indoor and outdoor storage and keep cars charged and on the key, ready for collection or delivery.

My car is already in the UK. Can you still help?

Yes. We pick it up from wherever it has got to, whether that is customs, conversions, testing or registration.
